The Davidoff Special 53 Capa Dominicana Limited Edition 2020 one of the latest releases from the Swiss company, but it is not new. Originally, the 53 was launched back in 2002 and was the first Dominican Puro Davidoff had made.
Eighteen years later, this Perfecto returns with an all Dominican blend that uses very aged tobaccos. The wrapper is ten years old, the binder has 8 years and the filler tobacco has been aged for up to six and a half years. You can find more detailed info here.
The oily wrapper is of a Colorado Maduro shaded tone, that is smooth to the touch. There are no veins present and the filling is more than generous. This Perfecto is a piece of art, with craftsmanship at the highest level.

Davidoff Special 53 Capa Dominicana Limited Edition 2020: it reveals notes of barnyard and a light spiciness in the cold draw. Once lit, the cigar starts out very light (due to the shape), with nuances of wood and spices.
Past the first inch, the cigar opens up with intense aromas of hazelnut and wood, on a sweet and creamy base. There is almost no spice present in the profile, except for some light notes of nutmeg here and there. Strength is medium-light (2/5).
The second third sees the flavors intensify. Hazelnut and wood are still the main flavors, but now they are joined by notes of herb, nutmeg, and white pepper are present in the retro-hale. The smoke is still creamy and the strength has jumped up a bit (2,5/5).
While the flavor intensity increases further, the profile somewhat collapses. The notes of cream, herbs, and nutmeg have disappeared. Wood, hazelnut, and white pepper remain. Strength is now a solid medium (3/5).
Overall, the Davidoff Special 53 Limited Edition 2020 is a very convincing product. There is nothing negative to say about how the cigar performs mechanically. Pair this with a balanced and complex smoke (except in the last third, where it unravels a bit) and you have a cigar that you can enjoy every time of the day.
