Balcones Lineage

Balcones Distilling of Texas has announced a new addition to their portfolio, the “Balcones Lineage.” The Lineage is a Texas Single Malt that uses a combination of Scottish-grown Simpsons Golden Promise malted barley and malted barley grown in the Texas High Plains. Just like the combo malts used in the whiskey, Balcones uses a combination of barrel styles for their aging process. The American single malt is matured in both used oak barrels and virgin charred oak barrels.

With Scottish single malts, it’s common practice to use oak barrels for aging. American whiskey production tends to use brand new charred oak barrels for their aging process.  “Whether it is unique flavor or process innovation, we are always striving to contribute something new to the whisky conversation,” said Jared Himstedt, head distiller at Balcones Distilling. “By combining new & old world ingredients, process, and maturation approaches, we have created something entirely new, and in doing so, we are hoping to push the American Single Malt category forward.”

Balcones Lineage is expected to be a regular production offering.  Availability began back in August 2020 only in certain markets in the USA. The lucky states are Texas, California, Colorado, Georgia, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, and Oklahoma. Later in 2021, Balcones will add additional markets for its release. The 750-ml bottle has an MSRP of $39.99.
