Dopo aver fumato le altre 2 EL 2012, mi appresto a provare l’ultima edizione limitata che arriva in Italia: Montecristo 520 (Maravillas no.3, cepo 55 x 155 mm. Il numero 520 è in omaggio all’anniversario no. 520 dall’arrivo di colombo). Si è fatta attendere, ma l’attesa è stata ampiamente ripagata.
Date le ottime EL Montecristo degli ultimi anni (Sublimes ’08, Grand Edmundo ’10) speravo in un “non c’è 2 senza 3”. Così è stato.
Nonostante mi aspettassi un qualcosa di buono ma “giovane”, durante la fumata ho trovato un sigaro che può essere goduto fin da subito, già pronto per essere gustato (cosa che con le EL, e con la grande maggioranza dei sigari provenienti da Cuba, succede assai di rado).
Queste sono le note che mi sono appuntato durante la fumata:
Montecristo 520 EL 2012: apertura con cacao, terra e retrogusto leggermente vegetale. Primo tercio con legno pregiato e pepe bianco in sottofondo. Compaiono note terrose, le spezie si fanno meno marcate ma restano leggere in sottofondo, sempre pepe bianco. Dopo circa un centimetro ricompaiono note di cacao, con il solito pepe bianco come retrogusto. Il pepe bianco diventa sempre più presente, sino a pizzicare le papille gustative. Evoluzione molto marcata considerando che si è sotto i 3 cm di fumata. Pur considerando il peso della cenere (ceppo 55) mantenendo il sigaro orizzontale la cenere si stacca da sola sui 3 cm, dimostrazione di qualità del tabacco. L’inizio del secondo tercio è molto speziato, spezie pregiatissime.
Nonostante abbia utilizzato il puncher il tiraggio è molto generoso. Produce molto fumo. La forza, che si attestava su media – (2/5), incrementa a metà sigaro (3/5). Terra e caffè aprono il terzo tercio. Spezie sempre molto marcate. Una leggera vena erbacea compare. Braciere uniforme. Piccola correzione nell’ultimo tercio. Finale con aromi molto marcati di legno e retrogusto molto spezziato. Forza medio + (4/5). Chiusura con forti sentori di legno e con una forza appagante. Valutazione in centesimi: 96.
Non resta che dargli un po’ di tempo e vedere come si trasformerà e come migliorerà col passar degli anni. Il fatto che sia così godibile sin da ora ed il fatto che sia davvero un ottimo sigaro, renderà il percorso di invecchiamento assai arduo..sicuramente la tentazione di godersene un altro sarà sempre forte!
Al mio palato, è l’EL 2012 più pronta da fumare. Cepo e lunghezza la rendono anche la più impegnativa, in termini di tempo e di degustazione. Se dovessi riassumere questo sigaro in una sola parola direi: “magnifico”.

After having smoked the two others EL 2012, I tried the last EL that reached Italy: Montecristo 520 (Maravillas no.3, cepo 55 x 155 mm. The number 520 is referred to the celebration of the 520th year since Columbus arrived). I was expecting something good, because the last Montecristo EL’s have been really enjoyable (both the Sublimes from ’08 and the Grand Edmundo from ’10 were really nice). I was expecting also a “young” cigar, but I had to change my mind, the cigar is really good and already enjoyable (and it’s a weird thing because usually cuban cigars need a bit of time to rest before being able to give their best!)
My smoking notes:
Montecristo 520 EL 2012: opening: cocoa and earth flavors with vegetal aftertaste. The first third is woody (fine wood) with white pepper aftertaste. Going on, earthy notes come up, and the spices become a little less but the white pepper is still here. After a centimeter the cocoa is back, and the white pepper is a nice finish to every puff. The white pepper gets more and more marked, and I can really feel the spiciness from it on my taste buds. Considering that I just enjoyed the first 3 centimeters, the evolution of this cigar is really noticeable. Keeping the cigar horizontal the ash falls at 3 cm circa, demonstration of the quality of the tobacco this stick is made of. The second third is really spicy and these spices are really elegant. Despite I used a puncher to cut the cigar, the draw is a bit too open for my taste. There’s a lot of smoke coming out this cigar. The strength is medium – (3/5) but it increases at half cigar. The opening of the third third is full of earthy and coffee flavors. The spicy are always present. There’s also a small grass vein but it just least some puffs. The combustion is regular, I just corrected the burning in the last part of it. The last part has a lot of wood aroma to it and the aftertaste is really spicy. The strength get medium + (4/5). The end of the cigar has a lot of wood flavor to it and the strength is satisfying. Score: 96/100.
I’m curious to know how this cigar will get in some years. The fact that it’s already so enjoyable and good will make the aging processes tough! For sure my hand will always try to get one while I’ll be choosing what to smoke!
To my palate this 2012 Limited Edition is more ready to enjoy than the other 2. The size of this stick make also the Monty 520 a MUST cigar for every aficionado. This cigar in one word? simple, the answer is “magnificent”!
